MAJOR
NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN HUDDERSFIELD CENTRE |
|
The decision reached by Kirklees Council on Wednesday 31st
October 2007, to work towards a development agreement with
Tesco paves the way for significant investment in
Huddersfield town centre by Britain's leading retailer.
Plans are to replace the existing, outdated Tesco store on
Viaduct Street with an exciting landmark development that
will include desirable private and affordable housing and
new office space with more shops, restaurants and a hotel
set in an attractive urban landscape. Leading
architects have been commissioned to come up with striking
designs for the scheme that will identify the site as a
major gateway into the town centre and strengthen
Huddersfield's appeal as a popular shopping destination.
The proposal by the Council to sell the existing sport
centre on Old Leeds Road and to develop new improved
leisure facilities elsewhere in the town centre gives
Tesco the opportunity to relocate from its existing store
and develop a brand new Tesco Extra on Old Leeds
road. The new store will offer customers much
wider choice, new product ranges and more town centre
parking. It will also create new local jobs.
Plans are also to provide around 60 affordable apartments
as part of the new development on Viaduct Street.
Tesco has been trading in the town centre since 1987 but
the store is outdated and in clear need of modernisation.
Over the past few years the company has been looking for
the best way to update its Viaduct Street premises, a
former Hillards outlet, and has held extensive discussions
with the Council to bring this forward. As Max
Curtis, Corporate Affairs Manager for Tesco explained:
"We are keen to make sure that our investment in a
better foodstore for Huddersfield supports wider
regeneration in the town centre. These
plans will help us to do just that. Not only do they
give us the opportunity to improve shopping for our
customers, they give us the chance to create a fresh mix
of shops and restaurants and to add to Huddersfield's
reputation as an existing retail attraction. On top
of that we're talking about a host of other benefits here
too - 300 or so extra jobs, new offices, town centre
houses, more parking - all reinforcing Huddersfield town
centre".
The
Council decision to work towards a development agreements
means that Tesco can now press ahead with working up its
proposals and start to consult with local people on its
plans. Tesco is committed to listening to local
people and will be holding extensive consultation with
residents, businesses and community groups before its
application for planning is submitted.
Walker singleton have advised Tesco throughout in relation
to these proposals.
